THE FREIGHT THING....
Australia Post are very handy for smaller parcels, and my triangular boxes, which are so good for sending multi-tipped large branches, are weighed rather than cubed, cost being around $20 to Perth, and about $35 - $40 for NSW - a bit more again for Queensland. Nexus are pretty good freight carriers, and the trucks will take down whole trees, up to just over two metres tall, in a large fridge box, on a pallet. Their service is probably more appropriate for larger nurseries who are ordering lots of rooted small trees - bigger bulk orders really, or a group of friends who want to combine their orders to cut freight costs down. You can collect from their yard or they will courier your box to your home for an extra charge. Their base rate is $45 but this can be a box of 20 or 30 branches, which is excellent value, I think.

Toll Ipec will also transport your box of cuttings overnight. You have to have an account with them though. If you're stuck, I can put your freight on my own account, and on-charge you once I know the end-cost. You can pick up your consignment at their depot in Abernethy Road, or they will deliver to your door via courier for an extra charge. Single cuttings travel well, either rooted or unrooted, in ordinary postal tubes, via Australia Post. Toll Ipec deliver Australia-wide, either road or air, but costs will of course, be higher. Hope this helps. We are a 'clean, green' state, with no frangipani rust or other 'nasties' here, so there are no quarantine restictions to worry about, except for Tasmania. However, when bringing plant material INTO Western Australia, you need to observe State Quarantine restrictions, which are much the same as for Tasmania. These regulations are updated from time to time so it pays to log onto their site to check current status of various restrictions.

At time of writing, I have just sent the largest box Australia Post will accept, across the country to NSW. It was quite a large, heavy box, 1 metre in length, 38cms high x 32cms wide, and cost $113.75. Cubed weight was well under maximum, and could have gone over 30 kg. The consignment arrived in exactly one week, and the frangipani branches were in good condition. This information has been supplied by the customer, in case it helps others. It would be good if a few people wanted to get together and do a bulk order, maybe, because I think I could probably have fitted up to 5 more branches in this box, for the same cost.

I can also custom-make boxes in heavy re-cycled cardboard that once contained windscreens (!) to fit your order. A common size that Australia Post currently accepts is 103cm x 32 cms x 22 cms and I can get eight good sized, multi-tipped branches in it for a cost of $35 (Perth) or $70.50 to the Eastern States. There is no express post out of Carnarvon, but to Perth, parcels often arrive the next day, and the Eastern States take about a week. All of our post goes by road, and there is no mail out on Mondays any more.

For Registered Post add $2.95 and Confirmation of Delivery (signed for) add $1.95. Australia Post offer insurance, calculated at time of posting. I find it a bit worrying that they even feel a need to offer insurance against them not doing their job properly (!) but there you go.

This page will continue to be updated using feedback from customers, so check back from time to time, to see if someone has found a better way to freight their goods. I am always open to suggestions. Lots of early consignments went down with friends of buyers calling in on their way north or south. Two trees were actually transported in a boat on a boat trailer, and are doing extremely well, having never looked back from their rather strange trip to their new home with my friend Georgie in Perth!!
